THE SPELL BEGINS
TO BREAK
NOW WE MUST GO BACK TO MR. AND Mrs. Beaver and the three other children. As soon as Mr. Beaver said, âThereâs no time to lose,â everyone began bundling themselves into coats, except Mrs. Beaver, who started picking up sacks and laying them on the table and said: âNow, Mr. Beaver, just reach down that ham. And hereâs a packet of tea, and thereâs sugar, and some matches. And if someone will get two or three loaves out of the crock over there in the corner.â
âWhat are you doing, Mrs. Beaver?â exclaimed Susan.
âPacking a load for each of us, dearie,â said Mrs. Beaver very coolly. âYou didnât think weâd set out on a journey with nothing to eat, did you?â
âBut we havenât time!â said Susan, buttoning the collar of her coat. âShe may be here any minute.â
âThatâs what I say,â chimed in Mr. Beaver.
âGet along with you all,â said his wife. âThink it over, Mr. Beaver. She canât be here for quarter of an hour at least.â
âBut donât we want as big a start as we can possibly get,â said Peter, âif weâre to reach the Stone Table before her?â
âYouâve got to remember that, Mrs. Beaver,â said Susan. âAs soon as she has looked in here and finds weâre gone sheâll be off at top speed.â
âThat she will,â said Mrs. Beaver. âBut we canât get there before her whatever we do, for sheâll be on a sledge and weâll be walking.â
âThenâhave we no hope?â said Susan.
âNow donât you get fussing, thereâs a dear,â said Mrs. Beaver, âbut just get half a dozen clean handkerchiefs out of the drawer. âCourse weâve got a hope. We canât get there before her but we can keep under cover and go by ways she wonât expect and perhaps weâll get through.â
âThatâs true enough, Mrs. Beaver,â said her husband. âBut itâs time we were out of this.â
âAnd donât you start fussing either, Mr. Beaver,â said his wife. âThere. Thatâs better. Thereâs five loads and the smallest for the smallest of us: thatâs you, my dear,â she added, looking at Lucy.
âOh, do please come on,â said Lucy.
âWell, Iâm nearly ready now,â answered Mrs. Beaver at last, allowing her husband to help her into her snow-boots. âI suppose the sewing machineâs too heavy to bring?â
